This project is for an elderly couple in Edinburgh who love their home, their garden and the time they spend tending to it. One of the key parts of the brief is creating a new home office for the client, who spends a lot of time in his home office. The existing office is upstairs, with limited space, daylight and views. The new extension will create a much more enjoyable and practical workspace, with generous storage for files and keepsakes, a desk with a view and, most importantly, a beautiful connection to the garden. The windows have been carefully positioned to frame specific views of the garden and surrounding trees, bringing in natural light while creating a strong visual connection with the outdoor space they love. The house has already been extended historically, so another important part of the design was making sure the new extension sits comfortably alongside the existing additions, creating a cohesive home rather than looking like a series of separate extensions. The project also includes the conversion of the existing garage into an ensuite bedroom with an accessible shower room. This is something I particularly like about the brief. It isn’t just about what the clients need today – it’s about thinking ahead and creating a home that can adapt to changing needs in the future. Good residential design isn’t just about making a home look beautiful. It’s about understanding how people actually live, what they love about their home, and how it can continue to work for them for years to come.
